Congratulations WVU Mine Rescue Teams! |
Congratulations to the teams of Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University on finishing 1st (Gold Team) and 3rd (Blue Team) in the National Collegiate Mine Rescue competition!
The competition tests the teams’ ability to locate and rescue three missing miners. “The scenario simulated a mine fire/explosion on a longwall section,” said Joshua Brady, associate director of mining extension at WVU and an advisor/trainer with the team. “They had to re-ventilate the contest area to provide fresh air to the location where the miners were found alive so they could be rescued safely.”
The second component of the competition featured a smoke exercise. “The teams worked in a simulated mine lab that was filled with water-based theatrical smoke,” Brady said. “This smoke is used to simulate a mine fire and greatly reduced visibility.”
Well Done Teams!

Sponsored by the SME Coal & Energy Division, the 2018 photo contest is open to all photo enthusiasts. The theme is “Mining in Motion,” and judges will be looking for single photos or multiple images stitched together that show “motion” and capture mining professionals in action. This is a great chance to share your images with others and give the public a different view of mining. |
First, second and third place prizes include cash and a one-year SME membership. Winning entries will be showcased at the 2018 SME Annual Conference & Expo and the 91st Annual Meeting of the SME-MN Section in Minneapolis, MN. Entries will be accepted via the online portal through Monday, January 15, 2018.
